AFRO CARIBBEAN SUMMER TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The Afro Caribbean Summer Tennis Open, formerly known as the Ottawa Summer Black Tennis Tournament, is an annual event aimed at promoting diversity and inclusivity in the game of tennis while increasing awareness about the sport within the Ottawa Afro-Caribbean community. The tournament strives to encourage healthy and active living through tennis and facilitate cultural exchange among participants and spectators.

This year’s event will feature several exciting additions, including a 30-minute tennis clinic specifically tailored for young Black youths aged 4 to 12 years old, facilitated by Elevate Tennis. Additionally, the event will feature a mini-junior champion tournament on the day of the finals, providing a platform for young Black junior tennis prospects to showcase their skills and compete.

In addition to the competitive aspect, the tournament finals will offer a vibrant atmosphere with food, music, and entertainment, promising an engaging experience for the community attending to watch the games. Through these initiatives, the Afro Caribbean Summer Tennis Open aims to foster a sense of community, promote tennis as a vehicle for positive lifestyle choices, and celebrate diversity within the sport.

The Afro Caribbean Summer Open is a collaborative effort between UNILEARNAL and Ottawa Loves Tennis. UNILEARNAL, a leading educational organization dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion, joins hands with Ottawa Loves Tennis, a local initiative passionate about fostering a love for tennis within the community. Together, they strive to make the tournament a platform for promoting diversity, inclusivity, and healthy living through the sport of tennis. This partnership underscores the shared commitment to creating opportunities for individuals of Afro-Caribbean descent in Ottawa while also enriching the community through cultural exchange and athletic engagement.

Round Robin/Single Elimination

The tournament format for the Afro Caribbean Supper Tennis Open involves 16 players drawn randomly into 4 groups for both men and women categories. Each group will engage in a round-robin format, where every player competes against each other within their group. The top two players from each group will progress to the single-elimination quarterfinals. From there, they will vie for a spot in the top 4 during the semifinals, and finally, the top 2 players will compete in the finals.

All round-robin matches will consist of the best of 3 games with No-Ad scoring, and in place of a third set, a tiebreak to 10 points will be played. For the single-elimination matches, the standard best-of-3-games format with Ads will be used

TIE BREAK TENS MIXED DOUBLES

Additionally, the bottom 4 players from both the men’s and women’s round-robin groups will team up to participate in a mixed doubles mini-tournament. This mini-tournament will solely employ a tiebreak to 10 points format.

TIE BREAK TENS JUNIORS

This year, we are introducing a Mini Junior tournament for players under 12 years old and under 8 years old. Young tennis players from the Black community will compete on the day of the finals for a trophy. The primary aim of this initiative is to inspire other young Black individuals to take up the sport of tennis.

FREE Tennis Lessons Junior/Adults

As part of this year’s Afro Caribbean Summer Tennis Open, a mini tennis clinic will be conducted by Elevate Tennis as part of the Finals day’s programming. The clinic is open to all but we will prioritize BIPOC. This clinic is specifically designed for absolute beginners and will run for approximately 30 minutes to an hour.
